Theories of Ion Permeation
نویسنده
چکیده
The Perspectives on Ion Permeation in the June issue of The Journal of General Physiology provided a unique exposition of contrasting views regarding kinetic rate models, electrodiffusions, Brownian dynamics, and PoissonNernst-Planck (PNP). The debate is timely, healthy, and desirable, because recent progress in the determination of the three-dimensional structure of biological ion channels at atomic resolution gives a fresh impetus to efforts directed at understanding the fundamental principles governing ion permeation (Cowan et al., 1992; Chang et al., 1998; Doyle et al., 1998). Theory is expected to play an important role in those efforts, though we are hard pressed to develop a consensus toward specific approaches. A necessary prerequisite for making any global judgement, however, is to understand the significance of the various treatments and how they relate to one another. In my view, there remains significant confusion about these issues that I hope the present contribution will help clarify.

Permeation models and structure-function relationships in ion channels.
Recent determination of the molecular structures of potassium andmechanosensitive channels from x-ray crystallography has led to arenewed interest in ion channels. The challenge for permeation modelsis to understand the functional properties of channels from the availablestructural information. Here we give a critical review of the three maincontenders, namely, continuum theories, Brownian dyna...
متن کاملHybrid Molten/Solid In2O3-Bi2O3 Oxygen Ion Transport Membranes
The hybrid molten/solid In2O3 - 30-48 wt.% Bi2O3 oxide materials were studied with respect to their transport properties. The conductivities, oxygen ion transport numbers and oxygen permeation fluxes have been measured by using the four-probe DC, volumetric measurements of the faradaic efficiency and gas flow techniques, respectively. We show that the...
متن کاملLetter to the Editor Forces Determining Ion Permeation
I would like to address two key issues related to the Perspectives on Ion Permeation . The first is the estimate of the size of the physical forces relevant for ion transport. Any good physical model of ion permeation requires the identification of the dominant forces. The second subject concerns a careful definition of the terms “mean field” and “mean field approximation.” Several articles in ...

متن کاملThe role of the dielectric barrier in narrow biological channels: a novel composite approach to modeling single-channel currents.
A composite continuum theory for calculating ion current through a protein channel of known structure is proposed, which incorporates information about the channel dynamics. The approach is utilized to predict current through the Gramicidin A ion channel, a narrow pore in which the applicability of conventional continuum theories is questionable. The proposed approach utilizes a modified versio...
